This issue contains a piece by J. Bryson Burrows describing Southern plantations, "planters" and African-Americans working and living on the plantations. Burrows is lavish in his descriptives for the manners and looks of the planters, but heavily embraces stereotypes in his description of the lives of African-Americans, despite his apparent distaste for the practice of slavery. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is an enthralling collection of thoughtful writings by two young authors. The work employs a wide range of literary forms, such as poetry, prose, and scriptwriting, to explore the sorrows, passions, and complexities of life, love, sex, and nature. The authors write from a uni…quely feminine perspective, delving into the dynamics of female friendship and the roles that women occupied in a patriarchal society. This volume is particularly notable for its exploration of women's inner lives, something not often seen in literature of its time. One theme that runs consistently throughout is the power of love, both romantic and platonic, to uplift, inspire, and sometimes torment the human spirit. The authors also explore the role of dreams and visions in guiding and empowering women. Thoughtful, reflective, and often tinged with melancholy, this book offers a fascinating glimpse into women's experiences during an era marked by both societal constraints and a surge toward self-expression. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Fair. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, brown cloth boards blank stamped on front and rear, gilt to spine. The exterior shows quite a bit of wear, particularly on the front exterior hinge which shows multiple splits, spine edges frayed, corners and edges show bumping and wear. Spotting and soilin…g is also present. The interior shows quite a bit of use as well, the front pastedown contains an old advertising plate from a Baltimore bookstore. There's also penciling, arithmetic, along with some old pricing penciled. The rear end page and pastedown shows additional arithmetic, although it is partially erased. A dampstain is present starting around page 221, skipping most of the advertisements, but reappearing on the rear pastedown and end page. The pages show different degrees of toning and foxing, mainly due to the different types of paper used in the printing process. The date on the title page states 1860, and the date showing on the copyright page appears to read 1860 but it is most likely 1858. It is difficult to read because of a typesetting error. The book itself is very readable despite condition issues.
