Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Books are still among the most important cultural achievements of humanity. Their invention was as important as the Internet: for the first time, a mass transfer of information became possible. Education, science, research, but also entertainment was based on a new revolutionary basis. Books are changing society until today. The technical possibilities of mass printing led to a radical increase in titles in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nevertheless, the conditions were still very different than today: Who wrote a book at that time, often wrote a life's work. This is reflected in the high quality of old books.Unfortunately, books age. Paper is not made for eternity. Therefore, we have made it our mission to preserve the book of knowledge of humanity and to make old books available in high quality at low prices.

Softcover. Condition: Very Good. The Aeneid is a Latin epic poem written by Virgil between 29 and 19 BC. It tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who travels to Italy where, in effect, he founds Rome. A Wikipedia entry about the poem says that "it comprises 9,896 lines in dactylic hexameter. The first six of the poem's twelve books tell the story of Aeneas' wanderings from Troy to Italy, and the poem's second half tells of the Trojans' ultimately victorious war upon the Latins, under whose name Aeneas and his Trojan followers are destined to be subsumed." This item is comprised of the illustrations that augmented this edition. Disbound and with signatures composed of loosely folded sheets, which are housed in plastic sleeves inside a black plastic folder. The title page is a steel engraved vignette depicting themes in four different directions, bow-and-arrow and sword for subsistence, laurels to wear, helmet and shield for defense and trumpets for announcement. Each side of the vignette depicts scenes of Ancient Troy, of compact residence, industry, agriculture and warfare. Verso of title vignette depicts the Trojae Campus, and opposite that at next page is a map. With 50 steel sheets, depicting Carthago and Charybdis etc., all compiled under the direction of C. Frommel. Text volume comprised of three signatures of folded sheets of hand-made paper, a bit foxed, lightly stained along edges, but remarkably clean and bright of appearance. Those three signatures each provide captioned details regarding each of the engravings, #1 through #50, from Trojae Campus to Lavinium. In German and Latin and Italian. Each engraved sheet is gorgeous to look at, almost surreally well detailed. C. Frommel (Karl Ludwig Frommel, 29 April 1789 ? 6 February 1863) was a German landscape painter and engraver, born at Birkenfeld. His Wikipedia entry says that he "studied at Karlsruhe, under F.J. Becker and Haldenwang, visited Paris, and earned a considerable reputation in Italy (1812?17). He was appointed professor at Karlsruhe where he founded the Society of Art and Industry . . . From 1830 to 1858 he was director of the picture gallery, which flourished."Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
