In 1877 he was appointed professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Art, Copenhagen. His illustrations, especially of children's books, are known everywhere and are more important than his paintings. Scarce first edition of this wonderfully illustrated children's book by popular English author Charlotte Mary Yonge. Yonge began writing in 1848 and published about 160 works, chiefly fiction expounding Christian themes. Her prolific writings redoubled the influence of the Oxford Movement and showed her keen interest in matters of public health and sanitation. Yonge's work was quite popular in the nineteenth century; among those who praised her work were Lewis Carroll, George Eliot, Christina Rossetti, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, and Anthony Trollope. In this book, Yonge takes he young heroine Lucy on a virtual trip around the world aided by her wonderful globe, visiting by turns, Greenland, Italy, Tirol, China, Turkey, Africa, Kamchatka, the South Seas, etc. A wonderful Victorian childrens book.
