210 x 136 mm; printed wrappers; pp. (x) + 69, incl. bibliography. Wraps very slightly sunned and discoloured; bookplate of Cameron McClure inside upper cover. Very good condition. "Olive Schreiner was born in 1855, and died at the age of sixty-five. The greater part of her life was spent in wretchedness: she suffered from ill-he…alth from about the age of seventeen and from painfully-tinged emotional disturbances from a much earlier age. Biography is frequently regarded as an interloper in criticism and, indeed, it does not help us with questions of value. My concern in this study, however, is not with the value of Olive Schreiner's work, although I make judgements, but with the relationship between her personality and her material. . In our time Olive Schreiner has, I think, more admirers than readers, but not as many admirers as she deserves. There is room for disagreement about her stature as a writer but, whatever that stature may be, she must claim our attention. Her comment on George Sand is applicable to herself: she was greater than her work." - Author's introductory note.
