Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. F.O.C. Darley; J.W. Ferguson Kennedy; E.H. Garrett; French Unattributed (illustrator). Special Edition. 5 hardcover volumes of James Fenmore Cooper novels from (estimated 1890) Illustrated Cabinet Editions Set. 5 hardcover volumes of novels by J. Fenmore Cooper (JFC) produced (estimated 1890) as part of an undated set. All are illustrated mostly by F. O. C. Darley, JFC's original illustrator of choice, with glassine protection of illustrations still bound in the books. The five novels are: The Spy (1821), 3 plates plus 455pp. JFC's 2nd novel and his first world-wide best-selling novel. Set in American Revolutionary War, addresses differences between European military versus colonial guerrilla warfare. The Pilot (1824), 3 plates plus 473pp. Naval fiction recounting the life of a naval pilot during the American Revolutionary War. The Prairie (1827), 3 plates plus 485pp. Exploration of the land acquired through the Louisiana Purchase. The Pathfinder (1840), 3 plates plus 532pp. 3rd in the Leather-stocking series. Tells of the old age and death of the colonial hero woodsman. Miles Wallingford (1844), 3 plates plus 476pp. Sequel to Afloat and Ashore. An idealized autobiography of JFC's life. James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) was an American writer of the early 19th century, whose historical romances depicting colonial and indigenous characters from the 17th to the 19th centuries brought him fame and fortune. He lived much of his boyhood and his last 15 years in Cooperstown, New York, which was founded by his father William Cooper. Felix Octavius Carr Darley (1822-1888), usually credited as F. O. C. Darley, was an American illustrator, known for his illustrations in works by well-known 19th-century authors, including James Fenimore Cooper, Charles Dickens, Mary Mapes Dodge, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Washington Irving, George Lippard, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Donald Grant Mitchell, Clement Clarke Moore, Francis Parkman, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Nathaniel Parker Willis. Over his career, he produced nearly 350 drawings for James Fenimore Cooper, which were later collected in a several-volume edition of Cooper's novels printed from 1859 to 1861. The books for sale came from the same set, although no dates nor advertisement regarding this set were found by us. We do not know if this is a part of a full set of JFC novels or if other authors were to be found in Dana Estes' "Illustrated Cabinet Editions." Hardcovers have green cloth boards with gold lettering & designs on spine, gold faux author signature on front, but no dust jackets. Spines have sun-fade. Gilt top page-edges. Deckled page-edges opposite spine. Interiors are complete, clean and text unmarked. Penciled inventory/ pricing in some front end-pages and Bretano's bookstore sticker in some rear end-pages. High-end book construction. Great shelf display. No copyrights claimed nor credited. No dates of publication nor printing. Promoted as Illustrated Cabinet Editions. Could have been published as early as 1875 to as late as 1905. Our estimate is 1890, just after Darley's death. No ISBN, LCCN, nor MSR. Thanks for looking! No Ownership Markings.

Paperback. Condition: Near Very Good. Bilingual Edition. A very early English/French bilingual wording of the Canadian National Anthem, first performed in French in 1880 as "Chant National" in Quebec City. The French version here, uses Judge Routhier's original wording, while the English version uses Teschemacher's wording, with striking differences between the two. Musical score, folio (14 inches tall), pp. [2], 3-6, [7 - blank], [8], (publisher counts covers in pagination), lower cover with the musical short "Boys of the King" (1909) by Bingham and James. Score is toned and lightly soiled with some creases, edge wear and a sympathetic white tape reinforcement to spine, name in ink at top of front cover. "O Canada !" was officially declared the Canadian National Anthem in 1980, exactly 100 years after it's original composition and first performance in Quebec. There have been many different wordings put forth and used along the way to it's present state, with this being a good example of an early bilingual one.
