Hardcover. Condition: VG-. W. Roberts (illustrator). First US Edition. Hardcover, no dust jacket as issued. Bound in green cloth with gilt illustration of a soldier, gilt on spine. First US edition thus with single publication date of 1871 on the copyright and title pages. Forest green end pages with front pastedown having owner's bookplate and first end page has penciled writing which states " Room no. 6, City Hotel, Frederick MD" and the rear pastedown also has a small number written in pencil in the corner. The second front end page bears the original owner's signature - also in pencil. These may be erased if desired but the original owner's bookplate and signature belongs to F. C. Knott - a noted banking executive and officer of Confederate Memorial Association for Frederick County. Scattered foxing is present as well as page edge toning. No hinge cracks found. Exterior has some spotting and corner bumps. Book condition grades as VG-minus. See photos.

This copy in unusual red cloth, ornately decorated in black and gold, with enlarged "M" of title on front board in light blue. "Erckmann-Chatrian Library" on front board (this title was no. 19 in the publisher's list of 20, though no list appears in this copy). Glossy yellow endpapers with former owner signature. Hinges with minor expert reinforcement, else a near fine, bright copy. In addition to the werewolf title, collects six other stories including "Queen of the Bees" (not listed in contents, but appearing as the final story). Includes ghost and supernatural stories "Uncle Christian's Inheritance" and "A Night in the Woods." Famous in their day for historical romances, Erckmann-Chatrian's lesser-known supernatural stories were admired by M.R. James.
