Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the causes of nerve-related health issues prevalent during the last half of the 19th century, a historical period known as the "nervous age." The author, a medical doctor, argues that the rise of nerve-related health issues in this period is a direct result of societ…al changes occurring due to the Industrial Revolution, which was fundamentally changing how people lived and worked. The book claims that individuals were experiencing increased emotional distress, anxiety, and physical symptoms associated with "nervousness." The author attributes this rise in nerve-related health issues to the increasing demands of modern life, excessive consumption of stimulants like alcohol and caffeine, earlier exposure to adult behaviors among young people, and the social pressures resulting from the growing gap between rich and poor. The book concludes by positing that these issues would only worsen in the years to come unless society took action to address the root causes of the "nervous age." This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condition: gut. 2000. The psychiatrist Richard Krafft-Ebing played a key role in the construction of the modern concept of sexuality, naming and classifying all non-procreative sexualities. This work examines the quality and extent of the work of this man, who is often maligned for contributing to Victorian repression…. Psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing (1840-1902) played a key role in the construction of the modern concept of sexuality. As the author of the famous "Psychopathia sexualis", he named and classified virtually all nonprocreative sexualities, synthesizing knowledge on sadism, masochism, fetishism, homosexuality and exhibitionism. His influence on the study of sexuality cannot be overstated, but it is often misunderstood. In the wake of Michel Foucault's influential sexual histories, Krafft-Ebing is often maligned as a contributor to the repressed Victorian construction of sexual deviancy. But in this powerful new cultural history Harry Oosterhuis invites us to reconsider the quality and extent of Krafft-Ebing's influence. Revisiting the case studies on which Krafft-Ebing based his findings, and thus drawing on the voices of his patients and informants, Oosterhuis finds that Krafft-Ebing was not the harsh judge of perversions that we think he was. He argues that Krafft-Ebing had a deep appreciation of the psyche, and that his work reveals an attempt to separate sexual deviancies from ideas of immorality. In the tradition of Freud, then, Krafft-Ebing should stand not as a villain, but as a contributor to more modern notions of sexual identity. Stepchildren of Nature: Krafft-Ebing, Psychiatry, and the Making of Sexual Identity (The Chicago Series on Sexuality, History, and Society) Author: Harry Oosterhuis teaches history at the University of Maastricht. He is the author of "Homosexuality and Male Bonding in Pre-Nazi Germany" and the coauthor of "Gay Men and the Sexual History of the Political Left." Warum der Titel Stepchildren of Nature?
