[8], 128 pages. Paperback booklet: H 20cm x L 13.75cm. Paper covers rubbed. Past owner's personal blind-stamp at top of title leaf; interior pages are otherwise bright and clean. Binding retains some crispness. A very good+ copy. Laid-in is a pamphlet (folded dimensions H 22.75cm x L 10cm) "Delta Queen '72" with February to November 1972 sailing schedule and fare information; Columbus, Ohio travel agency stamp on rear cover; folds out to three panels per side, i.e. six panels total. OCLC indicates that THE SAGA OF THE DELTA QUEEN was first published in 1951 but this copy does not reflect such age and is presumably fairly contemporary to the pamphlet's date of publication sometime in 1971 in advance of the 1972 cruise season.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. PILOTIN' COMES NATURAL by Frederick Way Jr, INSCRIBED by the Author on the Gordon C. Greene was a paddle steamer, launched in 1923, that operated under several names before sinking in St. Louis in 1967. illustrated by John O'Hara Cosgrove II Published by Farrar & Rinehart, 1943. CAPTAIN FREDERICK WAY is well on the way to get- ting himself called the Mark Twain of the Ohio River. Like Mark, he is a good pilot, a very likable fella both in and out of his books; and, like Mark again, he brings to writing the interest in people, the rich colloquial style, and the perception of the humors of living which distinguish both the Western waters and the Western lands. " In "Pilotin' Comes Natural" he tells the story of how a young boy fell under the spell of the inland river and became a pilot. You could call it "From Mud Clerk to Master Pilot," except that such a Horatio Alger title would convey little of the charm and distinction of Mr. Way's writing. He has made out of his early years a story which has humor, suspense and pleasant sentiment. Both pilotin' and writin' come natural to him. He loves both. And he's that odd fellow among writers a modest man. If, in writing, style is courage, charm is modesty. ? The book abounds in anecdotes of rivermen, from the mystery of how Captain Burnside foretold river rises to Dayton Randolph's tall tales of the fabulous packet Hurronico and her super-impossible doings. There are scenes on the long cobble-stoned levee at Cincinnati, with its warehouse buildings, rat-row remnants and smell of stale beer in the cool moist shadows of street and alley. For excitement, Dayton Randolph's running of a crossing on the Ohio above Scull Run in ?a fog thick enough to make butter out-a? equals Horace Bixby's famous deed at Hat Island Crossing. We rejoice when Dutch Henry gets his cat, Buck, back; and a lump rises in our throats as we watch the unjustly dis- charged Captain Guthrie leave the General Crowder and walk over the hill at Middleport. That's a picture I shall never for- get. It's one of those big little moments that stick in the memory like cockleburs in wool. Today it is good humor, good river and good story. In fact, for the first time in a long while I can report that a book is better than the blurb says it is. Undoubtedly it will send many a reader to Captain Way's "Log of the Betsy Ann," which continues the pleasant adventures of young Freddie Way. Mr. Cosgrave's illustrations are very good. He puts some rigging on his steamboats. Most illustrators leave it off, so that their boats look like skinned cats.NY Times Review "cloth wear, edge fraying, fading, insides bookplate residue, name, clean tight and very good" BX7. John O'Hara Cosgrove II (illustrator). Inscribed by Author(s).

Paperback. Condition: New. After the initial release in 1983 of Way's Packet Directory, 1848-1983, the demand was enormous for a similar treatment of the steam towboats that once populated the Mississippi River System. Captain Frederick Way, Jr., aided by Joseph W. Rutter, gathered together this wealth of information concerning steamboats that shoved river barges laden with coal, petroleum products, chemicals, sand, gravel, and similar bulk commodities from the headwaters of the Ohio River to the jetties of the Mississippi. The steam towboats that performed these services have completely disappeared from the scene, their places having been taken by hundreds of modern diesel-propeller towboats, but this thorough and remarkable reference guide helps preserve their history.
