This is the First Edition, and is inscribed and signed by the author on the title page. F. O. Matthiessen was a major literary scholar , specializing in mid 19th century American literature. He was the main driving force that established the concept of the American Renaissance, through his ground-breaking work on Emerson, Thoreau, Melville, Whitman and Nathaniel Hawthorne. This was presented in his book, "American Renaissance: Art and Expression in the Age of Emerson and Whitman" (1941). He also wrote important work on T. S. Eliot, Alice James, Henry James, Henry James Sr., William James, Sarah Orne Jewett, and Sinclair Lewis.
