Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book meticulously chronicles the instinctive actions of newborn chicks, such as drinking and pecking, alongside their acquired habits, such as distinguishing between foods and using social cues to enhance their pecking accuracy. Pioneering in its field when first published in 1911, this book originated quantitative methods to measure the development of animal instincts and habits. The author contrasts his findings with other leading researchers, building on their work to enhance our understanding of how chicks interact with their environment. The author's methods and findings have influenced the study of animal behavior for over a century. The book traces how, even when deprived of opportunities to learn, newborn chicks exhibit inherent accuracy in pecking, albeit less so than previously believed. Their pecking accuracy further improves over time as they gain experience. The author proposes that this enhanced accuracy results from social influences, marking one of the first recorded scientific observations of social learning in animals. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
