His 23rd Regiment was also in the Battle of Roanoke Island, the first major Union victory. He later fought at Cold Harbor, Petersburg, New Bern, Goldsboro, Kinston and Charleston. He wrote 52 lively, humorous letters to his mother and sister about battles and campaigns, and life in camp and on the march. He kept up with events in the war, commenting on actions by President Lincoln and generals he knew about: Sherman, Grant, McClellan, Burnside, Foster, Hunter and Butler." (publisher).
