Veale abogado y polemista británico plantea una lectura frontal de la posguerra: el foco no está en los crímenes juzgados, sino en aquellos que, según el autor, quedaron en penumbra por razones políticas y por el nuevo orden internacional. La obra se inscribe en el clima intelectual de la Guerra Fría, cuando ciertos ensayos circularon como "contrarrelato" de los tribunales y de la narrativa oficial de la victoria. El volumen apareció en España bajo el sello Editorial Nos (Madrid), una casa editora recordada por su catálogo de ensayo político combativo y literatura polémica en el siglo XX: ediciones pensadas para intervenir en el debate público, con títulos que hoy se leen también como piezas del archivo cultural y editorial de su tiempo. Para coleccionistas de ensayo histórico-político, este ejemplar tiene dos atractivos claros: por un lado, la rareza de ciertas tiradas de Nos y su circulación irregular; por otro, el interés específico del título dentro de la bibliografía sobre la Segunda Guerra Mundial y sus relatos en disputa.
