Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. An attractive Art Deco-era sheet music edition for 'Whispers in the Dark,' written by Academy Award-winning lyricist Leo Robin and celebrated German-American composer Frederick Hollander for Paramount Pictures' 1937 musical comedy Artists and Models, starring Jack Benny with Ida Lup…ino, Richard Arlen, Gail Patrick, Ben Blue, Judy Canova, and featuring appearances by Louis Armstrong, Martha Raye, Connie Boswell, and André Kostelanetz and His Orchestra. The song is featured by Connie Boswell and André Kostelanetz in the film and captures the sophisticated romantic style characteristic of late-1930s Hollywood musicals. A major highlight is the striking front cover illustration signed by renowned illustrator Russell Patterson (1893-1977), whose glamorous 'Patterson Girl' aesthetic helped define American Art Deco commercial illustration during the 1920s and 1930s. The cover depicts an artist at work amid elegantly stylized showgirls, perfectly complementing the film's backstage setting. Patterson's signed sheet music covers have become increasingly desirable among collectors of vintage illustration, Hollywood memorabilia, and Golden Age popular music. Condition: Very Good. Complete and firmly bound with light age toning consistent with age. Moderate edge wear and corner rubbing, including a small crease at the upper right corner of the front cover and several tiny edge nicks. Interior pages remain clean with no ownership markings, writing, or music annotations observed. Rear cover advertisement remains bright and complete. An attractive, well-preserved example with excellent eye appeal and a desirable signed Russell Patterson cover. Copyright MCMXXXVII (1937) by Famous Music Corporation, 1619 Broadway, New York. This is the original commercial sheet music edition issued for the film's theatrical release. Rear cover advertises contemporary Famous Music Corporation standards and current releases consistent with a 1937 publication. Leo Robin (1900-1984) was one of Hollywood's most accomplished lyricists, collaborating with composers including Ralph Rainger, Harold Arlen, Burton Lane, and Frederick Hollander. He won the Academy Award for 'Thanks for the Memory,' made famous by Bob Hope, and wrote lyrics for numerous Broadway productions and Paramount musicals. His songs remain standards of the Great American Songbook. Frederick Hollander (1896-1976) was a German composer who fled Nazi Germany and established a successful career in Hollywood. Known for blending European cabaret sophistication with American popular music, he composed for dozens of films and collaborated with many of the era's leading lyricists and performers. His work remains highly regarded by collectors of classic film music. Russell Patterson (illustrator).
