Add to basketLondon; Grey Walls Press Ltd. 1946. 8vo. Original mid blue cloth gilt, in decorative dustwrapper; pp. [vi], 7-147; with 4 coloured plates on card and text illustrations in half-tones; a very clean copy, both outside and in, protected by a lightly dusted jacket with small chipping to head of spine.First English translation of thi…s well-known French novel, originally published in 1894, and the first with these illustrations by Uhlman. The tragi-comic work, which is a contemporary take on the Cinderella fairy tale, centres around the rejection by his parents, and his community, of a young red-headed boy known as carrot-top. The work is possibly made more familiar through its adaptation to screen. The exquisite and heartbreaking Poil de carotte (1932), directed by Julien Duvivier, is commonly regarded as a masterpiece of French cinema.
