First edition. Illustrated with 58 full-page black-and-white reproductions. In publisher's typographically illustrated wrappers, designed by Jaroslav Benda. 64 [48] [12] p. Richly illustrated, scarce catalogue of the 1923 exhibition of 19th and 20th-century French art in Prague, organised by the Czech artist association, S. V. U. Mánes. With Czech Cubist cover designed by Jaroslav Benda. The catalogue contains the complete list of 389 exhibited paintings and sculptures, and features 48 full-page black-and-white reproductions of works by Braque, Cézanne, Degas, Gaugin, Van Gogh, Ingres, Manet, Matisse, Modigliani, Monet, Picasso, Renoir, Rodin, Seurat and Toulouse-Lautrec, among others. The cover of the catalogue was designed in Czech Cubist style by painter, graphic artist and typographer Jaroslav Benda (18821970), whose work significantly contributed to the development of Czech book design from the 1910s. The catalogue also features an advertisement of the pioneering Czech avant-garde photographer, Frantiek Drtikol's (18831961) studio. S[polek] v[ýtvarných] u[m?lc?] Mánes (The Mánes Association of Fine Artists) was an important artists' organization, founded in 1887 in Prague. It gained significance for its international exhibitions that catalyzed interaction between Czech and foreign avant-garde artists. It also played an important role in the development of Czech Cubism. Foreign members of the association included Auguste Rodin, Edvard Munch, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali and architect Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius. S.V.U. Mánes was dissolved after After WWII not to revive until 1990. Scarce, WorldCat locates only six copies in institutional holding. . Minor traces of creasing to the cover, with small light stain at the lower left. Pages yellowed due to ageing. A few pages dog-eared. Overall in very good condition. In publisher's typographically illustrated wrappers, designed by Jaroslav Benda First edition. Illustrated with 58 full-page black-and-white reproductions.
