"Publicado en Madrid en 1918 por la Comisión de Investigaciones Paleontológicas y Prehist…óricas (Memoria n.º 18) y agotado desde hace muchos lustros, cuya reedición facsimilar se ha escogido cuidadosamente, para iniciar la colección Patrimonios Culturales de España, y que se había convertido ya en una joya a la vez que rareza bibliográfica, constituye el primer estudio etnográfico que se intentó en la Península Ibérica, con vista no solo de explicar los orígenes de este curioso granero peraltado sobre pilotes y que prácticamente desde la Edad de Hierro se hizo consustancial al paisaje de la Iberia húmeda, sino también para un mejor conocimiento de los determinantes geográficos y económicos que impusieron su adopción. Su autor tuvo ocasión de elaborarlo durante la I Guerra Mundial, al tener que permanecer confinado en España de resultas de su misma nacionalidad, al no poder retornar a Polonia desde el norte de la Península, donde se había integrado en el equipo de Hugo Obermaier, que excavaba el yacimiento paleolítico de la cueva del Castillo (Puente Viesgo, Cantabria). Huésped forzoso de España, en menos de un lustro tuvo ocasión de realizar una gran labor, particularmente en Cantabria y el País Vasco, donde elaboró asimismo un trabajo pionero en torno a las llamadas estelas discoideas funerarias, antes de poder regresar a su patria, donde con el tiempo llegó a ser una autoridad académica. La presente edición, asumida por el profesor doctor Gómez-Tabanera, se presenta avalada con una semblanza biográfica del autor, escrita por su viuda, la profesora doctora María Frankowska, del Instituto de Etnografía de la Academia de Ciencias de Varsovia. Se le ha incorporado como anexo otra publicación, asimismo en facsímil de muy difícil consulta, referida al hórreo gallego, de la que fue autor en su día Juan López Soler (1931). Finalmente, en una segunda parte, diversos estudios escritos exprofeso para ella: "Estructura palafíticas y arquetipos culturales" (J.M. Gómez-Tabanera), "El hórreo hispánico como artefacto cultural" (íd.), "Hórreo y diplomática medieval" (Perfecto Rodríguez), "Estilos artísticos en el hórreo astur" (A. García Graña y J. López Álvarez), "Hórreos de Cantabria" (Alfonso de la Lastra), "Hórreos de Euskalerría" (E. Nolte y Aramburu) y, finalmente, "Espigueros portugueses" (Jorge Dias, E. Veiga de Oliveira y F.
