Black cloth boards with red spine label. Front board is detached. Half-title and frontispiece detached in one section with one additional detached page in later section. Contents have light scattered foxing, light damp staining to two plates and to a few pages upper edge; toning to maps. The first edition, first issue describing Sir John Franklin's first voyage to explore the north coast of the American continent east of the Coppermine River. Covering 5,500 miles and lasting for three years, the journey was one of unimaginable hardship, with many men in Franklin's party dying of starvation, exposure, and murder. Franklin returned to London in 1822 a hero, and this narrative at once became a classic of travel literature.

The Coppermine Expedition of 1819 to 1822 had as its goal the exploration of the northern coast of Canada and was funded by the Royal Navy as part of it's search for the Northwest Passage the expedition was plagued by a cobination of bad-luck, poor planning and poor choice of allies a…s well as worse than usual weather leaving the expedition continually close to starvation. The expedition, led by Franklin, also included George Back and John Richardson, both of whom would become significant Arctic explorers in their own right. The desperate retreat soon after making the coast, across uncharted territory in a state of starvation, left eleven of the twenty strong party dead before the survivors were rescued by native people of the Yellowknife tribe. Franklin was much criticized for haphazard planning and failure to adapt to the circumstances he faced, but in Britain he was received as a hero. Includes 30*plates, 11 of which are hand-coloured or aquatints with the remaining 19 being b/w and four folding maps inside of rear board all present. Tipped in errata slip at page 768. xvi+768pp. Fully bound in calf with red title plate in Morocco to spine and gilt decoration. Boards have been rebound with original tree-calf covering boards laid on to the new board covering. Corners bumped and scuffed to varying degrees, boards have light shelf-wear and some marking. Lower board has several gouge marks present, upper bard as single small gouge but several indentations to surface (see pictures). Spine which has six raised bands is entirely replaced and in very good condition. Marble to endpapers and page edges. Front fixed endpaper has label to lower edge with typed "Broughton". Contemporaneous name written on title page. Text block is tight and in excellent condition. Foxing throughout but largely light, greater to title pages and maps. Maps have been poorly folded and are somewhat creased, foxed and have some loss to margins. Book is very heavy, 2.8kg, additional postage likely.

The narrative is based on a diary. The two present maps are: 1) Route Of The Expedition From Isle De La Crosse To Fort Providence. Measures 9"x19.5". 2) A Chart of the Discoveries & Route of the Northern Land Expedition under the Command of Captain Franklin, R.N. in the Years 1820 & 1821. Measures 18.75" x 31". Both maps age toned, but without tears and are suitable for framing.

Two issues were published of this first edition, both in 1823; the first collates 768 pages and has the folding maps dated March 1823, as in this copy. The bookplate on the front pastedown is that of Henry Thomas Liddell, 1st Earl Ravensworth.… Liddell was a Tory politician who argued in favor of Catholic Emancipation in the late 19th century. Franklin, along with naturalist Dr. John Richardson, was appointed to lead an expedition overland from Hudson Bay to east of the mouth of the Copper-Mine River for the purposes of establishing the latitudes and longitudes of the northern coast of America, developing a correct geographical description of the country, and searching for a northwest passage. Franklin's narrative includes a great deal of detail regarding the country, indigenous people, the murder of Robert Hood, and the disappointment of failing to find a passage. Franklin's second expedition would be somewhat more successful, but the complete loss of his third and final expedition would launch decades of similarly dangerous recovery attempts. Sabin calls the appendix valuable in its contribution to the knowledge of natural history in the area, including nearly one hundred pages of scientific details regarding the Aurora Borealis. The handsome plates include illustrations of the native peoples, landscapes, flora and fauna, ships at sea, and more. "'The views of Arctic scenery with which these volumes are both illustrated and embellished, are of extreme beauty.' - QUARTERLY REVIEW" - Sabin. "Franklin's Narrative is of interest not only as a document of human courage and endurance, but also for its depiction of the Indians - Cree, Dog-Rib, and Chipewyan - on whom the survival of the expedition at least depended.
