"Unter Vorstadtkunst der Gegenwart wurden Kunstwerke verstanden, die dem Stil des Volkes entsprechen, ob sie nun von Professionisten oder vom Volke selbst hergestellt sind. Es wurden nach bestem Wissen und Gewissen nur… in Wien erzeugte Gegenstände aufgenommen" (Deckelblatt). Mit Texten und Illustrationen vom Neustifter Kirtag, dem Wr. Prater, der Sommer-Arena in Hernals (Rosensteingasse), den Siedlungen Bretteldorf, Bruckhaufen und Kaasgraben etc. Unter den abgebildeten Erzeugnissen u. a. Figuren für Kinder-Theater (so genannte Pimperln), Spielzeug mit Vogelstimmen, Tragantfiguren (Zuckerbäckerei), Devotionalien u. Scherz-Figuren aus Wachs, Lampions und Wandmalereien. Meist unter Angabe des Herstellers / Künstlers oder des Verkaufsortes. - Karl Fränkel (1895-1964) war Maler, Graphiker, Kunsthandwerker und Puppenspieler in Wien. Er machte seine Ausbildung an der Wiener Graphischen Lehr- uns Versuchsanstalt und besuchte Abendkurse an der Kunstgewerbeschule, wo er ein besonderes Interesse an Marionetten entwickelte. Sein hauptsächlicher Motivkreis war die Schilderung des Wiener Vorstadtlebens. 1939 war er im Konzentrationslager in Dachau interniert. Nach seiner Haftentlassung emigrierte er nach Großbritannien. 1945 kehrte er nach Wien zurück. (Vgl. dazu: Die uns verliessen. Ausstellungskat.
