First American Edition (first printing), issued the same month as the English edition. 8vo. 310pp. Beige cloth lettered in red at the spine, and with a red-stamped vignette to the upper board and the publisher's red top edge stain. With a title-page decor…ation. A trace of bruising to the backstrip ends. Contemporary former owner name and date inked to the head of the front pastedown (and obscured by the wrapper flap). A very good copy in price-clipped dust wrapper designed by Richard Floethe, and which repeats the title page design. The wrapper is fair only, with several inches of loss from the base of the spine panel, further small areas of edge-loss, some chafing to the natural folds, and some tenderness to the flaps. The author's second book, memoirs of his pre-Great War service in India with the Royal Welch Fusiliers. Like his celebrated first book, 'Old Soldiers Never Die' (1933), the text was thoroughly edited by his fellow Royal Welch Fusilier Robert Graves, who also provides a ten-page introduction to the US edition to introduce the author to American readers (up to that point, his debut had not been published in the US). This work details Richards's early years and Edwardian soldiering in India and Burma. "Vivid and proudly imperialist, it expressed his and his fello…w soldiers' attitudes, including their dislike of Curzon, the viceroy of India, and Lady Curzon" (ODNB). Richards and Graves served together on the Western Front in the Royal Welch Fusiliers. In 1930, Richards began writing his memoirs and sent his manuscript to Graves for advice. Impressed at how the private's frank account related the experiences of a common soldier, Graves substantially edited and had Faber publish Old Soldiers Never Die to great success, leading to their further collaboration on Old-soldier Sahib. "Graves attributed Richards's style to his signals training - vivid, cynical, and sometimes bawdy. Richards's books are unique as accounts by a socio-economically and educationally typical regular army private infantryman of Edwardian imperial soldiering and the western front.
