Wrappers. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Dover, DE: D.M. Publishing Co., 1936. First Edition. January, 1936 issue (Volume VII, Number 1). 10 1/8" x 7 1/8", illustrated wrappers, 64 pp. with illustrations and photographs (nudes). Cover artist is uncredited, but is certainly either Enoch Bolles or George Quintana (see scan).… Over-eighteen purchase only. Sturdy condition; some spine loss with chip toward bottom and slits at top and bottom, bit of cover soiling, fold at rear cover top left corner. Pages toned at margins but quite supple. Quite bright and unsoiled compared to typical examples. A strong Very Good, perhaps better. A scarce issue from of a thirties girlie mag which is in fact scarce throughout its 7-year run (1931-1937). A classic from a classic genre, collectible both for its cover (by either of the equally enigmatic Enoch Bolles and George Quintana) but also for its standard-fare contents: 16 full-page B&W nude photographs, soft (by today's standards) erotica short stories, and B&W illustrations for those stories which are often rather art-deco-y and rather collectible in their own right. With the exception of the occasional signed cover, the illustrations in this genre were generally unsigned and uncredited, and the authors of the stories were pseudonymic; while the genre was certainly not "indecent" enough to be banned, these magazines were not something most artists, photographers and authors particularly wanted credit for at that time. Stories in this issue: "When in Rome" (Michael Villon); "Lovely Pirate" (Gene Dolby); "Not So Dummy!" (Frank Roberts); "The Jeweled Garter" (Joyce Carroll); "Honey Cake!" (Gloria Dean); "Just For Excitement" (Arthur Wallace); "The Rainy Day" (Nona Benford); and "High Hat" (Ralph Gordon). Seasoned with a variety of sometimes rather intriguing ads and letters to the editor, as well. Rare piece of periodical history. L100.

Contact seller5-star sellerWraps, stiff spine binding. Condition: Good. No DJ issued. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Format is approximately 8.25 inches by 11.75 inches. [2], 126, [2] pages. Text is in English. Footnotes. Tables. Appendix. Ink marks noted. Bottoms of several rear pages 'dinged'. Each author contributed a chapter. The contents are…: Nuclear Issues in the Post-September 11 Era: Emerging Trends by Bruno Tertrais; Nuclear Energy Issues: Global Dimensions and Security Challenges by Frank Umbach; Proliferation and Non-Proliferation: What's Changed-What Hasn't? by Jon B. Wolfstahl; Non-Proliferation: Possible New Trends after September 11 by Alexander A. Pikayev; Nuclear deterrence Issues in the Post-September 11 World: An American Perspective by Michael O. Wheeler; The Nuclear Balance of Terror and September 11 by Brad Roberts; Nuclear Weapons after September 11 by Lewis A. Dunn; September 11 and the Need for International Nuclear Agreements by Michael May; and Appendix. In the fall of 2002, the Foundation for Strategic Research convened a small group of high-level experts on nuclear policy issues to discuss the consequences of September 11 and of the 'war on terrorism' for nuclear debates. Participants met in Paris on September 26-27, 2002, and later provided papers which are reproduced here. This project was sponsored by the French Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique (CEA). As Bruno Tertrais noted: What have been the effects of September 11 and the subsequent war on terrorism on the contemporary nuclear debate? This paper will argue that while they have not radically altered this debate, they have significantly impacted all nuclear policy issues. The degree to which they have affected these debates varies according to the issues. The events of September 11, the Afghan campaign, the anthrax scare, as well as the continued war on terror and the Iraq crisis, have emphasized the risks of nuclear terrorism in various forms. They have impacted the energy debate in several different ways, prompting the nuclear industry to review security practices and raising the spectre of attacks against power plants, but also questioning the overreliance of industrialized nations on oil from unstable regions which provide breeding grounds for terrorism. They have heightened the fear of weapons or fissile material getting in the hands of rogue regimes or non-State actors, altered the terms of the nuclear non-proliferation and arms control debate, and raised serious questions about the meaning and efficiency of deterrence. The other authors were equally insightful as they introduced their individual contributions.

Participating artists included Vito Hannibal Acconci, Terence Anderson, Arakawa, Gr…egory Battcock, Matthew Benedict, Michael Brownstein, Scott Burton, James Lee Byars, Rosemarie Castoro, Eduardo Costa, Bill Creston, Larry Fagin, Madeline Gins, John Giorno, Bobbi Gormley, Tom Gormley, Dan Graham, Katherine Greef, Stephen Kaltenbach, Joseph Kosuth, Leandro Katz, Alcides Lanzy, Lucy Lippard, Rosemary Mayer, Ben Patterson, John Perreault, Lil Picard, Adrian Piper, H Alexander Roberts, Marjorie Strider, Mr. T., Bernar Venet, Frank Lincoln Viner, Anne Waldman, Lewis Warsh, Luis Wells, Hannah Weiner and Lawrence Weiner. These organized street works can be understood as extensions of both the Pop art Happenings of the earlier 1960s and the street protests taking place in New York City and throughout the country during the 1968 elections, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Vietnam War. Whereas the Pop happenings usually took place in galleries and performance spaces, the street works were unconfined by physically walled-in spaces. Enacted in open environments, comingled with the natural flow of pedestrians, these performances created unlimited possibilities for happenstance with the sidewalk as the stage and the city as backdrop, the inhabitants of New York became active participants with the artists, willingly or not. Fair / Good. Folded in three and two tape stains. Name of recipient on verso in ink.
