From the dust jacket: "In 1938 the author was appointed secretary to Jean Sibelius and worked for the great Finnish composer for nearly twenty years until his death in 1957. During this period the author made notes about his conversations with his employer and about life in all its aspects at Ainola, the home of the master. Between 1957 and 1960 the author published a large biography in two volumes based on the material he had collected during two decades. The author has written this book especially for non-Finnish readers; he has brought together the most important and interesting material from his previous works, articles, and radio lectures about Sibelius. This it is much more than an account of twenty years in the life of a great man. Its special charm lies in the many human incidents and illuminating events that the author recalls. It is clear that no one else, except the nearest relatives of the composer, could possibly have written the book. We are introduced to the home of the composer and learn much of interest about it; we make the acquaintance of Mrs. Aino Sibelius; and we are told about the friends and visitors, and even about the attentions of a burglar. During long years the author has seen what the life of a world-famous composer is like, and he gives a marvelously graphic account of it. Music lovers will be especially drawn to the chapter "The creative artist," in which Sibelius speaks of his vocation as divinely inspired. For him, composition was "Brought to life by means of the Logos, the divine in art." Sibelius always, says the author, particularly wished to emphasize that all his seven symphonies were pure, absolute music, and exclusively fashioned from within, from his own musical ideas. They had no programme element at all--although many people believe that they have--and all the thematic material was his own. Another fascinating chapter tells of Sibelius's favorable attitude toward modern music, especially that of Bartok. He knew Schoenberg's dodecaphonic system well, though he never made use of it.". Second printing. Hardcover. Near Fine condition/Very Good dust jacket. Illus. by NOT a library discard. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping. NOT a library discard (illustrator).
