Contact seller5-star sellerFirst Editions. Octavo. In two volumes; x, [xi-xx], 564 and vii, [565]-1233 (1)pp. It was vital that the soldiers should know what they were fighting for? There was a tradition of pamphleteering from the past, and pamphlets were inexpensive to produce. This offered a convenient means of expression to individuals or groups with m…odest amounts of money and definite opinion. These pamphlets contained the arguments of such distinguished figures as Emma Willard and S.F.B. Morse, Francis Lieber, Horace Binney and others. These pamphlets helped define the meaning of the war and more. Bound in gray cloth stamped in gilt, spine lettering gilt, near fine in near fine clipped dust jacket lettered in black and purple. There is a closed tear to jacket of volume 1, but still a handsome set.
