Joyce di Franco Marucci vuole rappresentare un sano ed equilibrato ritorno alla critica. Dopo avere reinserito Joyce nel suo contesto di origine - la tradizione del Rinascimento civile, politico e soprattutto culturale e letterario di fine Ottocento in Irlanda -nei capitoli centrali e finali Marucci ripercorre il tirocinio poetico e delle epifanie e affronta meticolosamente le quattro unità narrative del corpus joyciano (più una quinta, drammatica), sia come creazioni estetiche autonome sia come tappe di un'escalation poliglotta e polistilistica che culmina nel banchetto dei linguaggi di Finnegans Wake. Tra i linguaggi partecipanti a questo banchetto uno dei primi commensali, dopo l'inglese, è l'italiano, perché quelle cinque opere germinarono, furono scritte o chiuse durante il determinante soggiorno decennale dell'autore a Trieste, dove la sua arte e la sua lingua letteraria si arricchirono e riorientarono. Marucci dedica perciò nuove e più approfondite ispezioni preliminari agli scritti italiani, critici e giornalistici, e alle traduzioni e alle autotraduzioni joyciane, tra le quali primeggia quella di Anna Livia Plurabelle da Finnegans Wake.
