Add to basketCondition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. A fantastic association copy of the first edition, first printing, linking together two lesbian titans of the modernist literary scene of 1920s Paris. Signed by both Alice B. Toklas and illustrator Francis Rose, inscribed by Toklas "For Camilla Steinbrugge[,] A friend of a good friend Sylvia is a friend of Alice B. Toklas 29. XII. 55. Paris." The Sylvia mentioned here is none other than Sylvia Beach, the legendary bookseller and original publisher of James Joyce's Ulysses. Steinbrugge and Beach were longtime romantic partners. Toklas and Beach became friends shortly after Beach opened her Paris bookstore in 1919. Toklas and her partner Gertrude Stein were among the shop's first customers, and Stein was one of its first annual subscribers. Beach was directly inspired to open her bookstore in Paris after visiting the bookstore and lending library, La Maison des Amis des Livres. Upon entering, Beach was surprised to find a female owner, Adrienne Monnier. Beach and Monnier became romantic partners and remained so up until Monnier's suicide in 1955. Shortly after this, Beach began a long-term relationship with Steinbrugge. Toklas' inscribed this book to Steinbrugge during December of 1955, at the beginning of Steinbrugge and Beach's relationship. The two would remain together until Beach's death in 1962. Bound in publisher's coarse beige cloth with gilt titles blocked in green on the spine; green topstain. Near Fine with light softening to spine ends, a series of small abrasions to cloth at bottom edge of upper board. In a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket with light toning and edge wear, light soiling, small tidemark to foot of spine.…
