Explorations Into Cahokia Archaeology Bulletin 7 is a collection of archaeological reports and papers about the ancient city of Cahokia, located near modern-day Collinsville, Illinois. Originally published in 1969 and revised in 1973, it is part of a bulletin series from the Illinois Archaeological Survey. The book provides a detailed look into early archaeological investigations at the Cahokia site. About the book Editor: The book was edited by Melvin L. Fowler. Publisher: The original publication was from the Illinois Archaeological Survey, with subsequent editions published by the University of Illinois. Content: The monograph compiles a number of archaeological studies, including: Descriptions of specific mounds and artifacts. Maps of the Cahokia site. Research findings and data from early excavations by University of Illinois archaeologists like A.R. Kelly and W. Moorehead. About the Cahokia site The site explored in the bulletin was a significant pre-Columbian Native American city and the largest settlement north of Mexico. It is important for its: Advanced urban planning: It was a large, sophisticated settlement with a fortified central city, suburbs, and over 120 earthen mounds arranged around vast plazas. Cultural importance: It served as a major center for the Mississippian culture, with significant influence on surrounding regions. Historical mystery: The city was abandoned around 1400 AD for reasons that are still being investigated, though some evidence points to major flood events or a prolonged drought.

The 1959 "Summary Report of Modoc Rock Shelter, 1952, 1953, 1955, 1956" (Report of Investigations No. 8) by Melvin L. Fowler is a key document detailing early archaeological excavations at the Modoc Rock Shelter in Illinois. These excavations uncovered 28 feet of cultural deposits, showing evidence of Archaic period occupation starting around 8000 B.C., which helped establish the importance of the Archaic stage in North American prehistory. The report covers the site's stratigraphy, artifacts, and the gradual specialization of its inhabitants in adapting to their environment over millennia.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. SUMMARY REPORT OF MODOC ROCK SHELTER, 1952, 1953, 1955, 1956, Melvin L. Fowler, softcover, probable first edition, illustrated, 1959. BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block and illustrations are in near fine condition with no tears, marks, or dog-ears. There is no bookplate nor signature of a prior owner. This is not a library book nor a remainder. The wraps are in good condition [discoloring around edges, a few tiny marks on the back]. 10 x 6 ½, 72 pages, 6 ounces XX [From the introduction] The Modoc Rock Shelter has contributed greatly to our understanding of the pre-history of the Eastern North America. It was the first site excavated east to the Great Plains with a demonstrable antiquity greater than 4000 B.C. and a range of time of over 6000 years. Since the publication of the report on the initial excavations at the Modoc Rock Shelter (Fowler, Winters and Parmalee, 1956) ; (Deuel 1957) , other sites of nearly equal antiquity and time range have been reported (e.g. Logan 1951, Ml 30-132 Crane 1956:666; Miller 1956, 1958). The net result has been a much different view of the cultures of this early time period than was previously held. XX THE CHANGING CONCEPT OF THE ARCHAIC. The above mentioned sites have been assigned to the Archaic Stage (Byers, 1959). In the original formulations the concept of the Archaic was purely descriptive. An effort was made to describe the tools and artifacts that were Archaic. It was reflective of this concern that Sears (1948) wrote the article entitled What is the Archaic? With the discovery of similar manifestations preceding agricultural and pottery-making societies in many areas of North America, the Archaic came to be thought of as a general time period. This concept gave rise to a consideration of the Archaic as a stage of development (not yet fully distinguished from a time period) (Ford and Willey 1941). The works of Willey and Phillips (1955 and 1958) demonstrate further changing emphasis concerning the Archaic. In their earlier formulation (1955: 740) the main criteria were that the Archaic stage is marked by the addition of grinding and polishing to the earlier techniques of percussion and pressure flaking. In their second work the point of emphasis changed and the authors (1958:107) briefly define the Archaic as the stage of migratory hunting and gathering cultures continuing into environmental conditions approximating those of the present. I have suggested defining the Archaic in terms of the subsistence base in which the utilization of local flora and fauna and a seasonal cycle are important. This trend or stage revolves around (1) the development of the forest-hunting technique, (2) the establishment of seasonal cycles of subsistence activities, and (3) the discovery of new sources of natural food.
