Lightly aged, worn at foot (with slight affect on signature); folded twice. 73 lines of text, in an untidy hand. Entirely in French, apart from the followin…g towards the end, suggesting an English-speaking recipient: 'Merry Christmas and New Year!' Excellent content. The recipient appears to be a British naturalist to whom he promised a magazine piece on a recent visit. Addressing his letter 'Cher Monsieur', he begins with warm season's greetings and thanks, before lamenting his tardiness ('épouvantablement en retard') with regard to 'les fourmis': 'Ma position ici me tue - [last word underlined] Cela devient intenable. Je suis litteralement tué de travail. [.] Toutes mes fourmis de Colombie (de mon voyage) sont encore dans leur tubes de verre.' He will not touch them before fulfilling his duties and 'ce que j'ai promis'. He begs him in complete confidence, not to say anything about 'un projet par lequel j'espère gagner du temps d'ici à un an'. He begs his 'correspondents de fourmis' to have 'patience et pitié de moi, J'ai enfants et il faut vivre et gagner sa vie.' He is only 48 years old, and is 'encore capable de me tirer d'affaire. Seulement je ne puis faire d'une heure 5 heures! J'ai trop de choses sur les bras - beaucoup trop. C'est terrible.' After wishing him a happy Christmas in English, he concludes by stating that he is going to send him 'une notice biologique que j'ai ecrite sur le Steamer à mon retour. C'est tout ce que j'ai pu faire!'.

Er vertrat Vorstellungen der Eugenik, gilt als Vater der Schweizer Psychiatrie und als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der Abstinenzbewegung in der Schweiz schreibt an den Professor für Geologie und Mineralogie "M. de Tribolet" . Maurice de Tribolet (1851-1912) war Professor für Geologie und Mineralogie an der Universität Neuchâtel und ein zeitgenössischer Wissenschaftler, mit dem Auguste Forel in Kontakt stand. Forel, der zwar Psychiater war, aber als Entomologe (Ameisenforscher) und Naturbeobachter agierte, pflegte intensiven Austausch mit anderen Wissenschaftlern der Westschweiz über regionale Funde und biologische Phänomene. Die Verbindung ist auch biografisch interessant, da Maurice de Tribolet ein Kollege und Bekannter der Familie des jungen Jean Piaget in Neuchâtel war. Forel korrespondierte mit dem jungen Piaget über dessen frühe naturwissenschaftliche Arbeiten (z. B. über Weichtiere), wobei das akademische Netzwerk in Neuchâtel, dem Tribolet angehörte, den Rahmen bildete.

Nous qui pensions fêter tout tranquillement en famille notre anniversaire, nous avons éreinté sans le vouloir la télégraphiste d'Aigle par toutes les dépêches que nous avons reçues, sans parler D'une Festschrift du Journal für Psychologie und Neurologie qui m'a été dédié, ce qui m'a surpris comme une bombe, ni de tout le reste. On me casse l'encensoir sur le nez, à moi qui déteste les hommages personnels ; je voudrais rentrer sous terre. ---- C'est peut-être heureux que je n'en aie pas le temps, car le travail me valonne à tout . Un de nos amis d'Autriche qui est riche m'a même fait un don généreux par les Bons Templiers. From Auguste-Henri Forel, Swiss psychiatrist, neuroanatomist and myrmecologist. Forel was professor of psychiatry at the University of Zurich medical school and head of the Burghölzi asylum. He wa…s a co-founder of the neuron theory, and is also credited with being Switzerland's first sexologist. He investigated the brain structures of humans and ants, and wrote a classic study of ant society (Le monde social des fourmis, 1923). Forel's postcard can be translated as follows: "My dear Madam, Our evening yesterday was a nice event-ca. 2000 listeners, lively discussion. "The date of my return from Budapest I will learn only while I am in Budapest. "However I would like to ask you for a favor because the future of the Alcoholic Anonymous Institute is close to my heart. "I would like to ask your son to get a copy for me of the Austrian Law Association and the corresponding paragraph of the penal law upon my return. "I would also like to have another discussion with Dr. Daum, maybe on Sunday, concerning this affair. With heartiest regards, yours very truly, thankfully and respectfully, A. Forel." .
