Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, spine and strips of front and back jacket slightly faded, corners very slightly bruised, not price clipped (no published price), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 365pp, illustrated. Many of the most famous escapes in history took place during the Second World War. These daring flights from Nazi occupied Europe would never have been possible but for the assistance of a hitherto secret British service: MI9. This small, dedicated and endlessly inventive team gave hope to the men who had fallen into enemy hands, and aid to resistance fighters in occupied territory. It sent money, maps, clothes, compasses, even hacksaws and in return coded letters from the prisoner of war camps and provided invaluable news of what was happening in the enemy s homeland. Understaffed and under resourced, MI9 nonetheless made a terrific contribution to the Allied war effort. As a young subaltern in the Coldstream Guards, James Maydon Langley (1916-83), lost his arm at Dunkirk and was captured but eventually escaped via Lille, Paris, Marseilles, Spain and Gibraltar. He describes the fierce fighting outside Dunkirk, his captivity, escape and extraordinary life in Vichy France, before the Germans controlled it. His fellow escapees and the French who sheltered them make a rich cast of characters. On return to London, Langley is recruited into the Secret Service and told to organise the safe return of allied soldiers, sailors and airmen who had succeeded in either escaping from or evading the Germans. Despite betrayal and infiltration from Germans, collaborators and traitors, over 3000 men were safely brought back to 'fight another day'. Langley and Airey Neave, who joined him after his historic home run from Colditz, had to wrestle with rival secret organisations for resources to carry out their vital work. Langley was portrayed by the actor Benedict Cumberbatch in the 2004 BBC series Dunkirk. Michael Richard Daniell Foot CBE, TD (1919-2012), was a British military historian and former British Army intelligence officer and special operations operative.

During World War II it was tasked with supporting available European Resistance networks and making use of them to assist Allied airmen shot down over Europe in returning to Britain. MI-9 infiltrated agents, usually by parachute, into occupied Europe. These agents would link up with a Resistance cell and organize escape-and-evasion efforts in a particular area, usually after being notified by the Resistance of the presence of downed airmen. The agents brought false papers, money and maps to assist the downed airmen. The usual routes of escape were either south to Switzerland or to southern France and then over the Pyrenees to Spain and Portugal. The group also facilitated the escapes of British prisoners of war both out of the prison camp and out of occupied Europe. It also communicated with British prisoners of war and sent them advice and equipment. Michael Richard Daniell "M. R. D." Foot, CBE, TD (14 December 1919 - 18 February 2012) was a British military historian and former British Army intelligence officer and special operations operative during the Second World War. He joined the British Army on the outbreak of the Second World War and was commissioned into a Royal Engineers searchlight battalion. In 1941 searchlight units transferred to the Royal Artillery. By 1942, he was serving at Combined Operations Headquarters, but wanting to see action he joined the SAS as an intelligence officer and was parachuted into France after D-Day. He was for a time a prisoner of war, and was severely injured during one of his attempts to escape. For his service with the French Resistance he was twice mentioned in despatches and awarded the Croix de Guerre. He ended the war as a major. After the war he remained in the Territorial Army, transferring to the Intelligence Corps in 1950. Ref SS 3.
