If after seeing the contents of this book, you don't seriously consider adding a visit to Madeira to your bucket list. This Atlantic Island paradise is a part of Portugal, off the western coast of Casablanca and the book is apparently centered around its major city of Funchal. The descriptions are interesting but things must have changed significantly since the book is over 100 years old. The paintings of the flowers and gardens are incredible and the attraction that will draw you to the Island. There are 24 captioned and tissue-guarded color plates, each one more amazing than the last. I have included photos of the Table of Contents and the List of Illustrations for your further information. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The beige hard covers have been darkened from handling but are still attractive. They have been slightly bumped and the back seam of the gutter is torn about half way but still well attached (I believe a competent book repairer could easily mend this tear). The spine is more darkened than the rest and there are some stains on the spine and the rear board. Inside, there is a nicely written (ink) gift inscription from a mother to her daughter but that is the only mark I found in the book. The interior pages and plates, happily, are generally clean and bright, without toning or foxing (in contrast to some of the copies found online!).
