Bei seinen…Untersuchungen des Edisoneffekts hatte er entdeckt, daß dieser nicht nur beim Anlegen einer positiven Spannung an die Metallplatte, sondern auch bei der Einwirkung von drahtlosen Wellen auf sie entstand. Er schuf damit nicht nur die Grundlage für die Rundfunktechnik, sondern leitete gleichzeitig das Zeitalter der Elektronik ein, das unsere Welt nachhaltig veränderte. - Im vollständigen Band der "Proceedings", enthält von Fleming noch "On an instrument for the measurement of the length of long electric waves" (pp.488-498, mit 5 Abb.). First edition. In November 1904, Fleming invented the two-electrode vacuum-tube rectifier, which he called the oscillation valve - the device that gave birth to modern electronics. "This was the first electron tube, the diode, ancestor of the triode and the other multielectronic tubes which have played such an important role in both telecommunications and scientific instrumentation".
