Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. Offered here is interesting piece - a vintage 1948 First edition fifth printing copy of "Psychosomatic Diagnosis", by noted psychologist Dr. Helen Flanders Dunbar, New York: Paul B. Hoeber, First edition fifth printing (October, 1948) This copy belonged to Dr. Frank Caffin of the Still-Hildreth Sanitoriam and bears his signed book plate on the front free endpaper. The book has some blemishing to the bottom edge area and above and a blemish to the spine and it has some old moisture fading to bottom page edges. Internally nice. "Psychosomatic Diagnosis is a foundational book by Helen Flanders Dunbar, a pioneer in psychosomatic medicine, published in the 1940s, that explores the connection between the mind and body, detailing how emotional states can manifest as physical illnesses. It is considered a classic in the field, with later editions and related works like Synopsis of Psychosomatic Diagnosis and Treatment further solidifying her influence on the understanding of mental and physical health interrelationships." "Helen Flanders Dunbar (1902 - 1959), later known as H. Flanders Dunbar is an important early figure in U.S, psychosomatic medicine and psychobiology as well as being an important advocate of physicians and clergy co-operating in their efforts to care for the sick. She viewed the patient as a combination of the psyche and soma, body and soul. Both needed to be treated in order to treat a patient efficiently. Dunbar received degrees in mathematics, psychology, theology, philosophy, and medicine. Dunbar founded the American Psychosomatic Society in 1942 and was the first editor of its journal. In addition to running several other committees committed to treating the whole patient, Dunbar wrote and distributed information for public health, involving child development and advocating for mental health care after World War II. "Towards the end of her life, Dunbar suffered from a self-destructive nature and alcoholism. These attitudes caused her to be removed from her position on the American Psychosomatic Society. She alienated leaders of the Council for Clinical Training for Theological Students. She also lost her position as its medical director after she demanded adherence to her own version of psychoanalytic orthodoxy. A former secretary who was a close friend and a former patient committed suicide. In 1954, she was in a serious automobile accident and was involved in costly ligation with a former patient. On August 21, 1959, Dunbar was found floating face down in her swimming pool. Initial speculations mentioned suicide. However, the coroner recorded a death by drowning. The drowning was most likely caused by a heart attack.".

Paperback. Condition: VG or better. Light discoloration to covers with some rubbing to spine; stapled binding wraps, well bound, unmarked copy. Helen Hartness Flanders (May 19, 1890 May 23, 1972), a native of the U.S. state of Vermont, was an internationally recognized ballad collector and an authority on the folk music found in New England and the British Isles. At the initiative of the Vermont Commission on Country Life, Flanders commenced a three-decade career capturing traditional songs that were sung in New Englandsongs that, in many cases, traced their origin to the British Isles. The timing of her life work was critical, coming as it did when people were turning away from traditional music in favor of listening to the radio. Today her nearly 4,500 field recordings, transcriptions and analyses are housed at the Flanders Ballad Collection at Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont and have been a resource for scholars and folk singers, since the establishment of the collection in 1941.
