Former owner's name on ffep, otherwise clean and tight in original tan buckram binding with gilt lettering at spine and a gilt silohuette on front cover; cloth worn at head of spine. Washington Allston (1779 â" 1843) was an American painter and poet, born in Waccamaw Parish, South Carolina. Allston was a pioneer of the American Romantic movement in landscape painting. He was well known for his dramatic subject matter and bold use of light and colour. After graduating from Harvard College in 1800, Allston moved to Charleston, South Carolina for awhile. In 1801 he sailed to England where he was admitted to the Royal Academy in London. After the death of his wife, Allston returned to the United States in 1818 and lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for the next twenty-five years. The owner of this book was Horace Bushnell Learned (1904-1987).

He was brother-in-law to Richard Henry Dana, Sr., who gathered much of the material for this life but was unable to put it all together. A reading copy, only, as a rodent has nibbled the cloth on the front fore-edge and there are stains on the covers. These are the only faults.
