Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, WITHOUT DEDICATION, IN BLUE PEN, ON TITLE PAGE. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, not price clipped (£16.99), no other inscriptions, internally clean tight and square,…overall a vg+ copy. 280pp. It is midsummer in the year 1601. Nick Revill and his fellow actors of the company known as the Chamberlain's Men are journeying across the Wiltshire Downs for a country house presentation of Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. It should be a pleasant well paid jaunt to celebrate a noble marriage, but instead the players find themselves in the midst of a tense family atmosphere, somehow linked to the omnipresence of the household's sinister steward. Very soon Nick finds that the Dream has turned into a nightmare, where murder appears commonplace, and before too long he must fight to save his own life against the ancient backdrop of Stonehenge. Quite scarce signed. Jacket after John Anster Fitzgerald (illustrator). Signed by Author(s).

Etching, ticket, 200 x 230 mm. This item may have at some time been mounted and will bear traces on the reverse of adhesive or removal of mounts. H. W. Sweeney [or Sweny] a journalist who wrote under the name of Mahlstick was assaulted and left for dead on the Fulham Road in October, 1887 leaving a widow and family. A group of f…ellow artists held an exhibition to raise funds on their behalf. Whistler, president of the Society at that time, contributed an etching. The design is by John Aster Fitzgerald [1819 - 1906], known as "Fairy Fitzgerald", a reclusive artist, he created a series of Christmas fairies for the Illustrated London News, but produced fanciful and colourful oil paintings; ".remarkable fairy pictures of pure fantasy, rarely based on any literary theme." [ Christopher Wood. Victorian Painting. 1999] He has recently seen a resurgence of interest leading to his oil paintings fetching between £30,000 and £120,000, though the record stands at £500,000.
