Firth had an enormous impact on anthropological theory and method, and on the development of Pacific anthropology. His most significant theoretical contributions have been in economic anthropology and the study of social relations through the perspective of social organization. These contributions have grown out of his fieldwork among the Maori, the Malay and the Tikopia. Professor Firth discovers how far economic categories such as "labor," "capital," and "value" can be applied to such primitive conditions, shows the effect of the absence of an exact exchange medium, and provides much quantitative data about property and food resources. The book points the way to the need for further inquiry in an important sphere of native life. Since Tikopia is almost the only remaining island in Polynesia where the ancient ways of life continue practically unaffected by European influence, it is a unique record for those concerned with the history and sociology of the native peoples of the South Seas. " Primitive Polynesian Economy is one of the first serious attempts to apply the concepts of modern economic theory to the institutions of a primitive community, studied by anthropological field methods. An illuminating introduction to the methods and problems of social anthropology, this book draws on a wide range of illustrations, including Raymond Firth's own experiences in New Zealand, Malaya and the Solomon Islands. Donald E. Worcester (1915-2003) was an American historian who specialized in Southwestern United States and Latin American history. He was president of the Western History Association from 1974-1975. Worcester graduated from Bard College in 1939. He received an M.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1941. He then served in the US Naval Reserve in World War II. He received a PhD. from Berkeley in 1947. From 1947 until 1963 he was a professor at the University of Florida. He then was a professor at Texas Christian University and history department chair. From 1960 until 1965 he was managing editor of the Hispanic American Historical Review. Worcester's view that history is made of complexities, not dualities, is seen as foundational for much of the understanding by later scholars of Southwest United States history.
