Curtis, like so many with his…middle class upbringing, embraced leftist politics in the 30s and he began writing novels about criminals, prostitutes, and boxers, almost as an attempt to understand or justify the underworld of crime. After the 1930s he disappeared, and today is one of literatures neglected but very worthwhile authors. These novels are hugely expensive in their original first editions, and this attractive new issue is a welcome chance to read this man again. Additionally, this has a worthwhile introduction from Paul Willetts that places this superb novel into context.
