"The most amazing, enduring and endearing one-man feat in the field of lexicography (PMM). Begun in 1747 and printed over five years, Johnson's DICTIONARY set the standard for all subsequent lexicographical work. Its excellence was immediately recognized in all quarters and the first edition of two thousand copies sold quickly. What set Johnson's DICTIONARY apart from earlier efforts was his reliance on the examples of English literature rather than his own intuition or previous word lists or dictionaries, a method that has been the standard ever since, from Richardson and Webster to the Oxford English Dictionary. Johnson, in undertaking this vast work, set out to perform single-handed for the English language what the French Academy, a century before, had attempted for French. He hope to produce "a dictionary by which the pronunciation of our language may be fixed, and its attainment facilitated;" and though, of course, no language can be frozen in time, by aiming at fixing the language he succeeded in giving the standard of reputable use. As Noah Webster stated, his work "had, in philology, the effect which Newton's discoveries had in mathematics." Johnson presumed to finish the work for the Dictionary in three years by his own labor, but he underestimated the work required and it eventually took nine years to complete (though not all of his time was spent upon the Dictionary, as he was also the editor of The Rambler at this time) and required the assistance of six amanuenses--five of whom, to Boswell's satisfaction, were Scotsmen. "Johnson's achievement marked an epoch in the history of the language. The result of nine years labor, it did more than any other work before or since towards fixing the language. The preface ranks among Johnson's finest writings. The most amazing, enduring, and endearing one-man feat in the field of lexicography" (Printing and the Mind of Man). Portuguese text interspersed with Arabic letters. Title with ornamental vignette incorporating Portuguese arms. Original marbled pictorial wrappers preserved in quarter morocco slip box. The rare original edition of the first etymological dictionary to record Portuguese words of Arabic origin. The entries are arranged alphabetically in Portuguese, followed by the equivalent Arabic word or source; a transliteration, and an explanation. The Royal Printing Office in Lisbon had already used this newly designed Arabic type in 1774 for Antonio Baptista's Instituições da lingua Arabica. João de Sousa was born in Damascus, Syria, and became the first professor of Arabic at Lisbon University. He was a frequently published member of the Royal Academy of Sciences who commissioned this publication. The next work on the subject, by Francisco de S.Luiz, did not appear until 1837. Includes a Catalogue of the Lord-Wardens of the Cinque Ports. Somner's earliest work was The Antiquities of Canterbury; or a Survey of that ancient Citie, with the Suburbs and Cathedral, London, 1640, dedicated to Archbishop Laud (reissued 1662; 2nd edit, by Nicholas Batteley, London, 1703). At the suggestion of Meric Casaubon he acquired a knowledge of Anglo-Saxon, and then wrote Observations on the Laws of King Henry I, published by Roger Twysden in 1644, with a new glossary. He made collections for a history of Kent, but abandoned this undertaking; this book being a portion of the work published at Oxford in 1693 by the Rev. James Brome, with notes by Edmund Gibson, and a life of the author by White Kennett. "Relations between the then Empire of China and the Republic of Costa Rica began in 1911 with the arrival of the Chinese diplomat Tam Pui-Shum on Costa Rican coasts where he was received by the president of the country, government authorities and representatives of the Chinese colony. Tam was the author of a Chinese-Spanish dictionary and a translation of Don Quixote into Chinese . introducing Spanish literature to the Chinese-speaking world . He had been China's representative to Spain and Mexico and was introduced as Special Commissioner of the Chinese Empire for Central America" (es.Wikipedia).
