Quarto (11" x 8 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Current Anthropology Volume 27, Number 1 complete issue. First edition. Archaeological data from a regional settlement pattern survey of the V…alley of Oaxaca, Mexico, are used to monitor how scarce goods and resources were allocated to members of society through eight phases from 600 B.C. to A.D. 1520. The goal is to determine how distinct historical social structures performed economically in terms of the goods and resources recoverable archaeologically. Measures utilized include land use and settlement characteristics, domestic architectural space, public architecture, pottery, obsidian, and a number of other artifact classes. The results show consistent linkages between specific land use and population variables and specific artifactual items in ways suggesting that political control, or lack thereof, structured the economy in patterned ways. Other factors, including urbanization and boundary permeability, are influential but not as persistently involved as political power. These results show how regional-scale archaeological data can be used to sharpen theoretical understanding of the evolution of political/economic systems. Condition: Edge wear, corners bumped, rubbed and creased else very good.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Mesoamerica has become one of the world's most important areas for research into the emergence of complex human societies. Between 10,000 years ago and the arrival of the Spanish in 1521, some of the most significant changes in the evolution of human societies occurred. These included the em…ergence of agriculture and sedentary villages, the growth of centralized governments (chiefdoms and states), and the rise of market systems, cities, and highly stratified social systems. In the last two decades a number of ambitious research efforts have produced exciting new data on culture change in Mesoamerica. In this revised and updated edition of a book first published in l98l, the authors present a synthesis of Mesoamerican prehistory, focusing on three of its most intensively studied regions, the Valleys of Oaxaca and Mexico and the Maya lowlands. An original framework of ideas is developed to explain long-term change in complex societies. In this revised and updated edition the authors synthesize recent research to provide a comprehensive survey of Mesoamerica, one of the most important areas for research into the emergence of complex human societies.
