Fickler war 1848 als Professor zum Lyzeum in Rastatt versetzt worden und erlebte dort den Militäraufstand sowie die anschließende Einschließung und Übergabe der Festung an die preußischen Interventionstruppen mit. Anders als…sein Bruder engagierte er sich nicht aktiv bei den revolutionären Ereignissen, sondern wahrte "eine besonnene Mitte" (ADB). Nach der Übergabe wurde ihm die Verteidigung der vor das Kriegsgericht Gestellten übertragen. Ficklers tagebuchartiger Bericht ist mit Corvin u. Förderers "Erinnerungen aus Rastatt 1849" die wichtigste Darstellung eines Augenzeugen. - Beiliegt: Moderner Stadtplan der Stadt Rastatt.
