Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Photos, Few Maps (illustrator). 1st. This fine example of a local history tells well the story of the Western Australian district of Tambellup, with the notes on the front flap of the dust jacket providing a concise summary of this vast inland plain, first spotted from a high vantage point in 1832, about three years after the establishment of the Western Australian State. The jacket note explains that prior to setting up of the State what was to eventually become the Shire of Tambellup was the domain of Aboriginals, joined first by itinerants --- kangeroo hunters, sandlewood cutters, shepherds and "occasionally those seeking refuge from the long arm of the law." The opening chapter deals with the two major aboriginal tribes inhabiting theTambellup region, with colonial settlers and lease-holders later leading to growing numbers taking up land, with the population expanding quickly from the late 1890s. The story relates how bush and forests were converted into productive agricultural land. These pioneer folk experienced all the challenges, obstacles and difficulties faced by Australia's early rural settlers. Full local government came late to Tambellup, with its Shire Council being gazetted in 1961. However in 1905 a Road Board had been established and it acted as a civil adminiatrator for the area pre-Shire. Judith Parnell's quality district history had its catalyst following Western Australia's sequicentennial in 1979, when memories of Tambellup's past were revived. The Shire President, in a foreword, said ".our pioneers started in a small way, living in isolation with few material posessions. Who were they? How did they manage? What has changed? " The answers are provided in Judith Parnell's history - commissioned by the Shire - and which was "evidence of her success and a fine tribute to our predecessors." This copy signed by the author below the half-title and is dated 14/2/83. First edition of 1982, 196 pages including two appendices listing Road Board and Shire Council members, WWI and WWII area enlistments. Brown hard covers with gilt spine litles are VG+, the FFEP has a pencil gift inscription, otherwise to book is internally excellent. Illustrated with 85 b/w photos, including portraits and two maps. Sepia tone pictorial DJ is VG with few chips at upper edges. By Author.
