The binding is secure and the main contents are clean, the folding map at rear is in nice fresh condition. There are some areas of staining to both the upper and lower covers (pictured), but these b…lemishes have not encroached upon the inside of the volume. There is also some staining to the fore edge (please see images), but only a couple of pages are very lightly affected in their left-hand margins. There are no previous ownership names, but the prelims are lightly marked; the rear free endpaper has a small blemish. The clean dust jacket is creased along its top edge, including at the head of the spine. Overall, a decent reference copy, but with some staining to the boards and fore edge, which barely affects the contents. Please see all the images for a fuller understanding of the condition. Dual English and German text. Folding map in pocket at rear.

The volume runs to 313 pages, with parallel text in English and German. Illustration is extensive: 79 black-and-white photographs of masks are set alongside 29 black-and-white field photographs documenting ceremonial context, together with nine maps within the text and a large folded map at the rear plotting rivers and towns, the peoples of the region, and the geographical distribution of mask types.
