In the first article, Fechner "answers challenges by critics to his hypothesis that the infant in the arms of Holbein s Meyer Madonna amalgamates the Christ Child and the donor s sick child. Cites a tradition in Swabian and Bavarian chapels . . . in which statues of the Madonna hold images of the deceased children of families wishing to commend their souls to heaven. Argues that drawing no. 65 in the Basel Kunstmuseum, depicting the virgin and a kneeling soldier, is a preliminary design for the painting.
