Upper corners of boards worn. Paper browned. First Edition. In the first article, Fechner "answers challenges by critics to his hypothesis that the infant in the arms of Holbein s Meyer Madonna amalgamates the Christ Child and the donor s sick child. Cites a tradition in Swabian and Bavarian chapels . . . in which statues of the Madonna hold images of the deceased children of families wishing to commend their souls to heaven. Argues that drawing no. 65 in the Basel Kunstmuseum, depicting the virgin and a kneeling soldier, is a preliminary design for the painting. Sees Holbein's own child as the model for the child in the drawing" (Michael, Hans Holbein the Younger, no. 828, p. 325). Copy of psychologist Edwin G. Boring (with his signature on the front flyleaf). OCLC locates copies in these US libraries: Harvard, Univ. Southern California, Stanford, Wisconsin (OCLC misspells "Holbein'schen" as "Holbeiin'schen").…
