Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Type: Hardback First Edition. Hardcover Ex-Lib Book in Good Condition. No Jacket. Ms Farnham's (1883-1957) three books set in the U. S. Midwest are probably her best works--"Rebellion"(1927); "Lost Laughter" (1933); and "Great Riches" (1934). She won a $10,000 prize for her first novel, "Rebellion". These stories portray marriage, small-town society and busyness adventures typical of their time. In "Great Riches" she depicts the rise of a young man in a country town, with domineering parents and scheming women. This story is set in a small pioneer Mid-Western town on the banks of the Missouri River. It is a story of the reactions of a charming masculine personality to the women who "furnish his background", told with insight into the emotions which make or break a sensitive individual. His problem of who would make a "better wife", is worked out through the lives of well-born, entertaining, and intelligent people, whome he looks upon as his own family. The book is solid, tight binding, and worn. Clean brown cloth with swirl design, rounded corners, worn at edges and around spine and spine hinge, rubbed down hinge on edges, and spine head/heel. Text block edges browned. Lib pocket and card, stamps one end papers; date stamps on CR and half title pages. Sewn binding tight & solid. Pages generally clean with occasional smudges, no underlining or writing, with some browning and foxing on some pages. 297 pages. 5.5 x 7.8 inches. 1934, Dodd, Mead & Company, New York, New York, USA.
