Noto per aver difeso Beatrice Cenci nel suo famosissimo processo (un altro famigerato processo coninvolse poi lo stesso Farinacci, con l'accusa di sodomia, poi caduta nel nulla solo per la grazia accordatagli da Clemente VIII), i suoi trattati giuridici (primo tra tutti la Praxis et theorica criminalis) condensarono brillantemente le codificazioni del diritto penale sino ad allora elaborate in occidente, facendo scuola per molti decenni, anche se gli studiosi moderni hanno ridimensionato il suo apporto alla storia della giurisprudenza (Franco Cordero lo ha definito mago dello scibile penalistico confusamente blaterante; cfr.
