Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Although Japanese scholars have acclaimed Baba Bunk? (17181759) asthe most outstanding essayist and public speaker of the Tokugawa period (16031868), Western historians of Japan have long ignored him. This is because Bunk?s very existence contradicts the historical narrative that they have c…onstructed. According to that narrative, Christianity in Japan ceased to exist by 1640, except in small, scattered communities, centered mainly on the Nagasaki area.Through a close critical analysis of Baba Bunk?s often humorous, but always biting, satirical essays a new picture of the hidden world of Christianity in eighteenth-century Japan emergesa picture that contradicts the generally-held belief among Western historians that the Catholic mission in Japan ended in failure. A Christian Samurai will surprise many readers when they discover that Christian moral teachings not only survived the long period of persecution but influenced Japanese society throughout the Tokugawa period.Bunk?s bold assertion that a representation of the Eucharist wouldbe more appropriate as a symbol for Japan than the coat of arms of the emperor or the insignia of the shogun would eventually lead to his arrest, trial, and execution. The legal proceedings against him reveal the governments embarrassment at the failure of its attempts to eliminate Christianity. This historical and literary study focuses on the personal as well as the public lives of many of the historical figures who were prominent in politics, philosophy, religion, and culture in the eighteenth century. The decadent state of Buddhism, the decline of Confucianism, and the popularity of the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters are some of the topics that illuminate this new history of early modern Japan and of the survival of Christianity. The first complete English translation of Baba Bunk?s Contemporary Edo: An Album of One Hundred Monsters is included as an appendix. Although Japanese scholars have acclaimed Baba Bunk (17181759) as the most outstanding essayist and public speaker of the Tokugawa period, Western historians have long ignored him. Through a close critical analysis of Baba Bunks often humorous, but always biting, satirical essays a new picture of the hidden world of Christianity in eighteenth-century Japan emerges. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 2002 The Edwin Mellen Press, Ltd. (Lewiston, New York), 6 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches tall orange cloth hardcover, no dust jacket, white lettering to front cover and spine, iii, 146 pp. plus publisher's ads. Moderate to heavy soiling and rubbing to covers, with bumping to upper and fore edges of front and rear… covers, and to tips. Inside, a very good to near fine copy - clean, bright and unmarked. ~HHH~ [1.5P] The purpose of this study is to examine thoroughly, through examples, the methods of translation and editing used by the mission press in its attempt to produce a native Christian literature for Japan. Part One examines two translations of De Imitatio Christi - Contemptus mundi jenbu and the Kontemutsusu munji, a later version. Part Two examines Guia de Pecadores - Giya do pekadoru. The study details their background, structure and style, with a textual analysis and comparison. The author identifies the translations' Buddhist terminology, the only religious language available to the Jesuits in Japan, and explains how Buddhist terms were used to convey Christian ideas. Clear evidence of the translators' knowledge of Japanese religions, aesthetics, waka poetry, and classical literature can be found in both the style and the content of the Jesuits' translations of European Catholic books. Rev. Farge's book focuses on an important, yet largely unexplored, area of inquiry - namely, the multiple contexts, cultural, linguistic, religious, and psychological, within which a number of Christian classics were not only linguistically but also culturally translated into Japanese. This is the only in-depth literary study in the English language of Japanese Christian texts from this period.
