Hijo de un párroco de Dorset que le obligó a estudiar la lengua griega desde los seis años y una madre dulce que le transmitió el amor por la cultura clásica y el latín dejándolo huérfano a la edad de doce años, estudió en el Hertford College de Oxford donde se licenció en Historia en 1882. Después de graduarse, fue maestro y tutor, hasta que, gracias a su habilidad para los negocios y las lenguas, llegó a convertirse en el presidente de la Armstrong Whitworth Co., una de las mayores empresas armamentísticas del mundo. Compaginó la vida empresarial con su pasión por los libros, creando una importante biblioteca personal.
