4to (172 x 233 mm). Japanese illustrated manuscript, ink and colours on Japanese paper. 27 leaves. With numerous illustrations of several types of prey, including a number of water fowl and game birds together with several images of the goshawk and fine details of a number of feathers. Stitched as issued in the original blue wrappers with hand-lettered paper label on one cover. Stored in a custom-made green morocco-backed clamshell box, spine lettered "Takazukasa" in gilt. A highly attractive illustrated Japanese work on falconry (Takagari), probably copied from an earlier manuscript as part of the education of aspiring falconers. "Falconry is first documented in the Nihon shoki (Japan's official chronicle, compiled in 720), where it is said to have been introduced by a Korean courtier in 359 AD. Falconry appears in many literary works, beginning with the Manyoshu poetry anthology of the 8th century, and was practiced by the ruling elites until the end of the 19th century. Emperors, nobles and members of the Samurai class retained falconers; ceremonial and technical aspects of falconry were developed. Several families established their own schools of falconry around the 14th century, and the teachings of those schools were transmitted through generations" (Harvard exhibition, online). - The short treatise is adorned with numerous appealing illustrations done in ink, including instructions on the construction of stands, and with several images of the goshawk, fine details of a number of feathers, and illustrations of several types of prey, including a number of water fowl and game birds. - Covers rubbed and worn along margins, a dampstain affecting upper corner throughout. A number of worm-trails throughout, the most prominent affecting the outer margins of the upper cover and the first 16 leaves, with some loss of text and image. Spine slightly faded. - From the collection of the Swedish artist and author Gunnar Brusewitz (1924-2004) with his bookplate on the inside cover of the box. Brusewitz was much interested in nature and wildlife, and his large library, assembled over more than 60 years, reflected this interest, as well as his fascination with the history of hunting.…

Four anatomical diagrams & two text illus. in Vol. I and many fine & large color paintings & diagrams in Vol. II. 47; 42 folding leaves. Two vols. 8vo (268 x 194 mm.), orig. patterned semi-stiff wrappers, new stitching. [Japan]: from colophon leaf in Vol. II (in trans.): "Selected by Mori Masayuki ???, age 66, April 1856 [with his two seals]; artist Eish? ?? [artist name Ch?kosai ??? given on final leaf of text in Vol. II], age 66, copied" [with his two seals]. These two finely illustrated volumes describe the art of falconry and the medical treatment of falcons as practiced by the Yoshida ry? school, founded in the 17th century and one of the two most prominent schools for shogunal falconers (the other being the older Suwa ry?). The shogunate granted each school official residences in Edo; the Yoshida ry? was located in Zoshigaya, and Suwa ry? in Komagome. The Yoshida school established its own formal techniques and aesthetics of falconry and, of the two, was considered the more refined, with advanced methods of training, diet, veterinary medicine, hunting etiquette and rituals, and development of specialized perching positions. Our texts were written by Mori (b. 1790), a member of the Yoshida school. He wrote and edited many works on falconry, all of which remained in manuscript. Our two manuscripts are part of Mori's larger work "Falconry in Four Seasons," which he compiled in 1854. Our first volume (Part VIII of Mori's greater work) is concerned with the medical care of falcons and includes discussions of moxibustion, diet, and herbal medicines. Falcons are subject to a number of respiratory, parasitic, and viral diseases, many of which are diagnosed here; remedies using herbal medicines are provided. Falcons also suffer attacks by other birds (cranes, geese, eagles, etc.) and animals, and the text offers treatments for broken claws and beaks, wounds and cuts, bone fractures, and mouth and nostril bleeding. There are instructions on the proper feeding of falcons (meats of various kinds). The illustrations in the first volume depict four anatomical cross-sections of falcons. The first two show moxibustion locations, and the second two show likely areas of injury. Towards the end are another two fine illustrations showing successful and unsuccessful applications of moxibustion. The text also includes many materia medica recipes, dosages, and proper usage. Our second volume is also part of Mori's masterwork and is beautifully illustrated with a series of seven splendid paintings of falcons. The first image identifies and names all the feathers of the bird when its wings are spread, along with the parts of the legs and talons. The other paintings include a careful and detailed image of the head, wings and talons, and images of the bird's physique, one from the posterior and, and another from the front (identifying all the parts of the head). The final image depicts a falcon's skeleton. This is followed by another series of 12 paintings of the falcon's prey (pheasants, rabbits, quail, heron, ducks, etc.). Each prey animal is shown carefully hung and bled. In another series of three pages of paintings, we see the equipment used for training and keeping falcons (baskets and tools) and the very elaborate cages used to transport the falcons. The final pages show a six-page panorama of a falconer carrying a falcon on his arm to the field, prey flying in the distance, the falcon in pursuit, and the falconer separating the falcon from its prey. The final leaf of the second volume bears the seals of the author Mori and the artist Eish? with the date 1856. Fine condition. There is some worming throughout, carefully repaired. Preserved in a chitsu.…

An account of expenses incurred by Arnau (Arnaldo) Arracha, a footman at the royal residence of Bellver Castle near Palma, while transferring several falcons to Perpignan in southern France and during his return to Mallorca. The document was drawn up for the treasury of King Jaume III of Mallorca, headed by Pere (Pedro) Burguès.The falcons' journey to Perpignan included stops in San Feliu de Guixols, on the northern coast of Catalonia, and Colliure in France. The foodstuffs purchased for this journey are listed as wine, salted meat, and cheeses, as well as meat for the falcons, ropes and cages. From Girona to Perpignan, Arracha travelled on horseback, and his expenses for wine, horseshoes, shoes, paper, etc. are itemized: "Memòria al senyor en Pere Burguès, thesaurer, que li fa Arnau Arracha, servent del castel de Belver, per l'anada de Rocelló ab los falcons al senyor rey [.] While no year is stated, June 12th was a Saturday ("disapte", or dissabte) in 1322, 1333, 1339 and 1344. A separate second leaf contains the account of various additional expenses incurred by Jaume (Jaime) Miafré, some in Sineu (Mallorca).Written in Mallorcan, a dialectal variant of Catalan, in a scribal hand, on cotton paper manufactured in Mallorca by Arab paper makers. Under Muslim rule from 903 until 1229, Mallorca ("Mayurqa") had formed one of the Eastern Islands of al-Andalus ("al-jaza'ir al-sharqiya li-l-andalus"). The art of papermaking, long mastered by the Arabs, had reached the southern Spain only in the 12th century through the Muslim conquest, at a time when most of western Europe still favoured vellum as a writing material. The Arab tradition of papermaking is still evident in this early 14th-century insular specimen. An extraordinarily rare survival in excellent state of preservation. An account of expenses incurred by Arnau (Arnaldo) Arracha, a footman at the royal residence of Bellver Castle near Palma, while transferring several falcons to Perpignan in southern France and during his return to Mallorca. The document was drawn up for the treasury of King Jaume III of Mallorca, headed by Pere (Pedro) Burguès. - The falcons' journey to Perpignan included stops in San Feliu de Guixols, on the northern coast of Catalonia, and Colliure in France. The foodstuffs purchased for this journey are listed as wine, salted meat, and cheeses, as well as meat for the falcons, ropes and cages. From Girona to Perpignan, Arracha travelled on horseback, and his expenses for wine, horseshoes, shoes, paper, etc. are itemized: "Memòria al senyor en Pere Burguès, thesaurer, que li fa Arnau Arracha, servent del castel de Belver, per l'anada de Rocelló ab los falcons al senyor rey [.] Primerament, comprà aquel dia meteys pa per metre a la mar per sos optes, 4 s.
