Fort et rare traité de l'abbé Federico Cordenons, imprimé sur les presses du Séminaire de Padoue où il enseignait. Contrairement à la simple plaquette d'introduction de 36 pages parue sous le même titre et à la même date, ce volume de plus de 200 pages constitue la somme monumentale et définitive des recherches de l'auteur sur la paléographie préromaine d'Italie du Nord (civilisations d'Este et de Padoue). Cordenons y déploie une érudition monumentale pour analyser l'alphabet, la grammaire et les structures linguistiques des stèles, vases et objets votifs en bronze découverts lors des grandes fouilles archéologiques de la région. S'opposant avec véhémence aux thèses de l'école philologique allemande de Carl Pauli, l'auteur tente d'apporter "un peu plus de lumière" sur le mystère des anciens Vénètes et des Euganéens à travers un système de déchiffrement inédit et hautement documenté.
