In the Ottoman Empire, the word "esnaf" (craftsman, tradesman) covered a wide category of people, referring to artists as well as artisans. In fact, anyone who produced or sold something, or p…rovided a service, in short anyone who worked for a living, was included in the category. The master artisans who produced prayer beads were considered as esnaf, as were the watermen who roamed the streets bare-foot crying "abates love's fire" as they freely distributed curative water. Members of the old fire squads entered the esnaf category as did porters. Peddlers formed another part of the esnaf mosaic. These poor people who carried their heavy load, walking the streets of istanbul often bare foot and dressed in rags, originated from the provinces. This book is not a historical research on the esnaf. It is a series of portraits gathered from the cinders of Ottoman social history.

This area was very important militarily and religiously the Byzantine Istanbul, known as the 'Second Romeî'. Among the historical structures taken over in this period by our district that was on the passage way of the Byzantine Army were Yedikule Fort to which Sultan Mehmed II Conqueror made some editions and Baliklama Ayazma (Holy Spring) and Church. Balikli Spring first became the subject of an epic on the Byzantine enthronement Of Leon I and became known with its modern name owing to an epic that is rumored to have been created during the conquest of Istanbul (Constantinople). Also, we can wholeheartedly say that our Zeytinburnu District has a rare wealth in terms of Islamic mysticism. Dervish Lodges within the boundaries of our district such as Perisan Baba, Hadji Mahmud Aga, Seyyid Nizam and Merkez Effendi Dervish lodges, as well as Yenikapi Mevlevi House, mentioned as a music academy, have been occasion for the education of extremely important figures of our mystic history.".

In fact, anyone who produced or sold something, or provided a service, in short anyone who worked for a living, was included in the category. The mas…ter artisans who produced prayer beads were considered as esnaf, as were the watermen who roamed the streets bare-foot crying "abates love's fire" as they freely distributed curative water. Members of the old fire squads entered the esnaf category as did porters. Peddlers formed another part of the esnaf mosaic. These poor people who carried their heavy load, walking the streets of istanbul often bare foot and dressed in rags, originated from the provinces.
