Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 5th or later Edition. The Observer's Book of Freshwater Fishes - Observer's Book No. 6. Printer's code: 819.658 which I believe indicates that the book was actually printed in Jun 1958. The book, which was the sixth of the series, was first published in wartime in 1941, and was reprinted five times before this printing, with a revised edition in 1970. There were five different jacket designs. Describing eighty-two species with 76 illustrations 64 of which are in full colour. ***Near fine in bright green textured boards with black titles to the spine and front board. The covers are beautifully clean and unmarked. No creases or tears. Corners sharp. No bumps. Page block edges nice and clean. No reading lean to the binding. Internally the book is also near fine - extremely clean with a neat ownership name at the top of the first blank page, but no further inscriptions or annotations. Printed by lithography on matt-finish paper. No marks. No creases. No cracking to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a near fine colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 5/- net. The dustwrapper is complete with just a sliver of loss at the top of the spine, and there is some rubbing and creasing at the extremities, commensurate with age and handling, mainly at the top and tail of the spine. No serious creases or tears. No chips or loss. No browning and no fading, apart from slight fading to the red lines on the spine. ***147mm x 95mm. 253 pages including a detailed five-page Index plus seven blank pages for notes at the back of the book. ***'This guide for the pocket contains descriptions of 82 species, with 76 illustrations, 64 of which are in full colour. Of necessity, the text is comparatively brief, , but it will be found sufficient to aid the observer in identifying these creatures, many of which are already quite familiar to some degree, but some of which are seen only rarely.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A reprint of the fifth edition, as stated on the printer's page, published in 1958, in very nice collectable condition, in the original dustwrapper. Whilst the Observer's books from this period are not uncommon, many of the books were handled by children and consequently show a lot of wear and tear. They can prove to be quite hard to track down now in nice condition in the original dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. A. Laurence Wells (illustrator). …
