Per lo storico del pensiero economico la risposta a questo interrogativo è abbastanza agevole. Chi conosca Schmoller o abbia letto anche solo poche pagine dei suoi lavori non riesce a far coincidere l'id…ea che se ne fa con quella che circola ancora nella pubblicistica scientifica corrente. Si ha l'impressione, come rileva Schefold, che anche oggi la fortuna scientifica di Schmoller dipenda non dai dibattiti scientifici e da un'attenta valutazione dei risultati della sua ricerca bensì dalle politiche prevalenti all'interno della comunità scientifica. Tanto che, anche quando economisti e storici del pensiero economico riscoprono temi che sono stati al centro degli interessi della scuola storica il rapporto tra etica ed economia, quello tra istituzioni, individui e mercati, il problema della dimensione storica dei fenomeni economici, il tema del relativismo all'interno della conoscenza scientifica. Essa continua ad essere esclusa dal dibattito, determinando un vero e proprio spreco di energie, connesso con l'incapacità di utilizzare le esperienze scientifiche del passato, le loro ragioni, i loro limiti.
