First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Hardback, with printed titling to spine and upper board. 21.5 × 14cm, 59pp. This book serves as a biography of Michael Carlier (1891-1917), a young French Trappist monk from the Abbey of Mont des Cats. During the First World War, Carlier was conscripted into the French army, served on the front lines, and was killed in action. Dom Eugene Boylan charts Carlier's internal journey - how he maintained a profound, contemplative, and mystical interior life of prayer while surrounded by the chaos, violence, and duties of a soldier in the trenches. Condition: A good reading copy. Whilst the contents are in good, clean condition, there is a mark to the spine from a convent library (Our Lady's Convent of Southam, Warwickshire), and there is general rubbing and marking to the boards.
